He guides clients through labor and employment issues and dispute resolution, including wage and hour, discrimination, harassment and wrongful termination claims. John also has extensive experience in privacy rights and data security, and frequently writes and speaks on those issues.
A partner in Womble Carlyle’s Business Litigation Group, John devotes his practice to advising businesses in the increasingly complex area of labor and employment law. Whether helping his clients avoid litigation by guiding them through complex employment decisions and compliance matters, or zealously representing them in lawsuits, administrative charges, and arbitrations, John provides strong advocacy and effective strategies to manage risks. John’s sound legal analyses, practical advice, and commitment to client service have allowed him to become a trusted advisor in many business sectors.
In addition, John handles business litigation involving employee raiding, unfair competition, theft of trade secrets, and covenants not to compete. John also works with businesses in areas of privacy rights laws and data security, and in conducting effective internal investigations into misconduct and criminal acts in the workplace. As a core part of his practice, John assists clients in drafting and enforcing effective employment contracts and severance agreements, covenants not to compete, policies and procedures, and employee handbooks. John routinely defends companies in litigation involving discrimination and harassment claims under Title VII, the ADA, the ADEA, the FMLA and equivalent state laws; claims of wrongful termination and retaliation; claims under the NLRA; and individual and collective action claims for unpaid wages and overtime under the FLSA and state wage and hour laws. John regularly appears before state and federal administrative agencies and courts, both at the trial level and appellate level.
As part of his commitment to serving the needs of businesses and employers, John conducts training seminars and presentations for the management of various industries regarding the constant changes in employment law, social media issues, and privacy rights. John is a frequent speaker and author on employment-related issues and is the principal author of three Firm blogs: Fair Labor Standards Act; SEEmployment Law; and Non-Compete and Restrictive Covenants.
