He has nearly two decades of experience in IP litigation, helping clients resolve IP infringement, false advertising, trade secret and antitrust cases for a wide range of industries. John also has experience in gaming and sweepstakes law.
John’s case management philosophy is straightforward – understand the client’s objectives at the outset of the engagement, and work with the client to achieve those objectives in the most efficient manner possible.
John’s experience includes litigating patent disputes involving computer sweepstakes software, transit peptides, carpet tufting machinery, printing and foiling technology, catalytic converters, dye tubes, firearms, furniture designs, apparel construction and manufacturing, RF chips, and various other mechanical and electrical engineering technologies. John’s copyright litigation experience includes disputes involving computer software, video games, wild game mannequins, children’s books, clothing designs, photography, musical compilations, and architecture. John’s trademark and unfair competition experience includes disputes involving furniture designs, NASCAR numbers, ammunition packaging, comparative advertisements, and various product names and packaging. John’s antitrust litigation experience includes winning summary judgment for a hospital in defense of a thirteen count complaint in which the plaintiff sought more than $100,000,000 in trebled damages for alleged HCQIA violations.
John also has considerable experience helping clients investigate and respond to data breach and cybersecurity incidents, and with responding to related governmental investigations. John has also handled various aspects of gaming law, including representing entities in the video game and sweepstakes markets with respect to regulatory matters and litigation concerning the legality of the games and sweepstakes systems.
John is admitted to all state and federal courts in North Carolina, as well as to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and The United States Supreme Court.
John has been voted by his peers to Best Lawyers in America for intellectual property litigation for the last several years, and has received Martindale Hubbell’s highest peer review rating (“AV”) for more than a decade.
