He has a wide-ranging business litigation practice, including cases involving personal injury, fraud, product liability and negligence claims.
Jonathan Reid Reich is a young litigator with a broad range of experience. He has represented clients in all stages of litigation; from planning how to file a complex lawsuit until the final appeal. He was counsel of record in two cases which were recognized among the most important insurance cases in North Carolina in 2014. He is also the editor and an author of Womble Carlyle’s North Carolina Insurance Desk Reference e-book.
Jonathan's diverse litigation practice ranges from complex commercial and business litigation involving fraud and unfair business practices to defending products liability, wrongful death, and catastrophic personal injury cases. He has defended a number of multi-state class actions in federal court. Jonathan also enjoys representing financial planners and registered investment advisors in FINRA arbitrations. More broadly, his experience includes defending against claims of securities fraud and professional liability litigation, arguing in the North Carolina Court of Appeals, post-merger litigation, and the general representation of individuals, closely-held corporations, and business interests. Jonathan also represents clients in the North Carolina Business Court for complex and significant corporate and commercial law cases. Additionally, Jonathan spends, on average, over one hundred fifty hours per year on significant pro bono cases, including civil rights cases in federal court and death penalty appeals.
A significant amount of Jonathan’s practice is devoted to insurance coverage and bad faith, insurance procurement, and subrogation matters. Jonathan has counseled policyholders, brokers, managing general agents, carriers, and reinsurers regarding insurance coverage and claims. Jonathan has advised on – or actively litigated – insurance matters in a number of jurisdictions; from Florida to New Jersey. He also advises on the insurance implications of corporate mergers and commercial transactions, as well as regulatory issues with captive insurance companies and insurance premium finance companies. He regularly litigates insurance coverage, first-party bad faith, extra-contractual claims, errors and omissions, and failure to procure claims. These include policies of life insurance, commercial general liability insurance, workers’ compensation insurance, directors & officers insurance, pollution legal liability insurance, cargo insurance, and international medical insurance. Jonathan has been quoted, interviewed, or cited by Insurance Business America, Insurance Journal, Self-Insurer (the magazine of the Self Insurance Institute of America) and The D&O Diary.
Jonathan is based in Winston-Salem, although his practice takes him to courthouses across the state. He has litigated cases in numerous state trial courts, in the specialized North Carolina Business Court for complex business litigation, in both the North Carolina Court of Appeals and North Carolina Supreme Court, and in all federal courts in North Carolina and the federal Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Prior to attending law school, Jonathan was a merchandise buyer at Lowe's Home Improvement, one of the nation's largest retailers. This experience working for a Fortune 50 corporation helps Jonathan focus on the business objectives of a client's litigation, as well as specifically assisting him in construction and product defect cases.
Jonathan received a B.A. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a J.D. from Duke University School of Law, where he served as an editor on both Duke Journal of Comparative and International Law and Duke Law and Technology Review.
Jonathan is a co-founder and co-author of All Risks Covered, Womble Carlyle’s blog regarding developments in corporate insurance, cyber insurance and captive insurance, primarily in the Carolinas.
