Cal is one of our most experienced trial lawyers, having tried more than thirty jury trials in state and federal courts. He has also tried numerous non-jury matters, including numerous declaratory judgment trials. Cal is a partner in the Winston-Salem office.
Cal has spent the last 10 years splitting his time between (a) insurance coverage litigation, (b) managing the diet drug litigation in N.C. (more than 1,200 cases), and (c) large class action cases (including representing Triad Guaranty in mortgage insurance litigation). He also has experience in construction defect coverage and litigation, directors and officers’ liability coverage and litigation, ERISA litigation, commercial arbitration, FINRA, aviation litigation, fiduciary litigation, claims arising out of stock purchase agreements, defending errors and omissions claims against insurance agents and brokers, and EMTALA investigations.
Cal has defended Products Liability Actions against manufacturers or sellers of the following allegedly defective products: automobiles, trucks, yachts, motorcycles, chairs, washing machines, tar kettles, paints, dyes, food products, building supplies, sporting equipment, toys, cranes, plumbing fixtures, and space heaters.
Cal has spent decades litigating on behalf of the construction industry, representing condominium owners in a large construction defect case against the general contractor, architect and the various subcontractors, and defending construction companies on behalf of the firm’s insurance company clients.
Cal is the Chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. He is also a founding director of Legal Aid of North Carolina and recently completed a two year term as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Legal Aid of North Carolina. He previously served as a member of the Board of Legal Services of North Carolina. He has recently been reappointed to The Board of Directors of Legal Aid of North Carolina. In addition, he chairs the Statewide Access to Justice Fundraising Campaign and the Strategic Planning Task Force for Legal Aid of North Carolina. He has also served as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Project since 1995. In 1996, he was honored by the Firm with the first Irving Carlyle Pro Bono Publico Award. The North Carolina Bar Association named Cal the 2007 recipient of the William L. Thorp Award, the Association’s top honor for pro bono service.
When Cal is not working, he spends most of his time with his wife, three daughters and one son. He is an avid reader of history and politics. He also enjoys golf when time permits.
