A former federal prosecutor, he represents clients in white collar criminal defense cases, as well as general business litigation.
Russ represents clients in a broad range of complex litigation matters, focusing both on white collar criminal defense and general business litigation. Russ’s current cases involve financial transactions, mergers, federal investigations, asset forfeiture matters, and criminal fraud, as well as defending companies in employment litigation, breach of contract legal matters, and government enforcement actions.
As a former federal prosecutor, Russ tried 26 cases to verdict. He currently advises clients at all levels of the litigation process in both criminal and civil matters.
Prior to joining Womble Carlyle, Russ was a law clerk to The Honorable Judge Frank D. Whitney in the Western District of North Carolina. He also served as Legislative Counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
In 2014, Russ was awarded the Mecklenburg County Bar’s pro bono award for Outstanding Individual Attorney for his work on a case involving a cross-border custody dispute brought under the Hague Convention. In 2015 and 2016, he was named to the Super Lawyers Rising Stars list, which is limited to 2.5% of attorneys under the age of 40 or in practice for 10 years or less. He was also named to Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite for litigation in 2016.
Currently, Russ serves on the Board of Directors of the Mecklenburg County Bar.
Russ received an LL.M degree with distinction from Georgetown University Law Center in Securities and Financial Regulation. He also received his J.D. from Georgetown and his A.B. from Duke University with distinction.
