John Hagner in Legal Times: Housing Hope in D.C.

Henson Ridge, a new 600-unit housing project in what was once a blighted part of the Southeast section of Washington, D.C., has been acclaimed as a landmark in providing safe, attractive, and affordable housing for low-income and moderate-income people.

The project replaces two old public housing projects that fell into decrepitude and were demolished between 1998 and 2001. Instead of the dreary sameness that was once associated with public housing, Henson Ridge now features townhouses, curving sidewalks, parks, and open space.

Henson Ridge was made possible by a grant of almost $30 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to the D.C. Housing Authority. The District of Columbia also put in major amounts of money, and there is plenty of private money as well.

Womble Carlyle lawyers were instrumental in bringing this about. One of the project's developers, Mid-City Urban LLC, is a Silver Spring, Md.-based firm that is a client of Womble Carlyle's Real Estate Development Practice Group in the D.C. office.

On November 22, 2004, John Hagner, a member of that group, wrote a lead article about Henson Ridge for a special real estate section of Legal Times.
