RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.—Womble Carlyle attorney Bernie Brown will be speaking at the 2012 Laws of Science Symposium, to be held March 29 at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.

Brown will speak on “So, you want to be a lawyer, now?!—Making the transition from science or engineering to law.” His presentation will highlight careers available to scientists and engineers in patent law and the steps necessary to get there and options along the way. Brown is a Ph.D. scientist who worked as a researcher and university professor before becoming an intellectual property attorney.

The Laws of Science Symposium is presented by the North Carolina Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Section and provides an opportunity for science and business professionals to learn about protecting their intellectual property in the life sciences. The Symposium is intended to raise awareness of intellectual property law and related issues (patenting strategies, technology transfer, infringement, due diligence, agreements, forming start-ups) to scientists, managers, and attorneys.  UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp will be the keynote speaker for the event.

Bernie Brown is a patent attorney in Womble Carlyle’s Biotechnology/Chemical/ Pharmaceutical Patent Practice Group. His practice includes preparing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications, reexaminations, freedom to operate analyses, invalidity, and non-infringement opinions. In particular, he assists clients with patent matters relating to biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, and chemistry and technologies in the biotechnological, chemical, and pharmaceutical fields. Brown practices in Womble Carlyle’s Winston-Salem, N.C. office.
