Changing Legal Landscape in Labor and Employment

On Wednesday, June 24, Womble Carlyle's Labor and Employment and Employee Benefits lawyers in the Triad presented the "2009 Legal Update: The Changing Legal Landscape in Labor and Employment" for members of the Winston-Salem Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) in the firm's Winston-Salem office at One West Fourth Street. The Legal Update provided SHRM members with an overview of the changing legal landscape that Human Resource professionals will be facing in 2009, and included a review of new laws and regulations, as well as a forecast of legislative initiatives and proposed laws to keep an eye on in the future.
Charlie Edwards began the day by providing an overview of the changing legal landscape through a historical timeline. In the morning sessions, Mark Sampson addressed the new 2009 FMLA Regulations and Jimmy Powell presented an overview of the Employee Free Choice Act and its potential impact on union organization. Patrick Allen spoke in the afternoon about the "New COBRA Premium Subsidy". John Pueschel gave two presentations, a session on the ADA Amendment Act and the closing presentation on "Managing Technology in the Workplace". Each session included a discussion of new laws and their potential impact, answers to audience questions, and provided a set of action items to help HR professionals put their knowledge to work.
