Womble Carlyle attorney John Sweeney will be a speaker at the upcoming Toxic Torts And Environmental Law Seminar, presented by DRI, the Voice of the Defense Bar. The event takes place Feb. 10-11 in New Orleans and is sponsored in part by Womble Carlyle.

Sweeney will speak Feb. 11th on “Where Will the Buck Stop? Insights into Government Decision-Making in Greenhouse Gas Litigation and Regulation.”

The controversy among the federal courts, Congress and administrative agencies over who will set greenhouse gas policy is at its peak. A recent surge of federal circuit court decisions indicates the increased likelihood that climate change will be addressed in the courtroom. The EPA has issued its endangerment finding, and its stationary and mobile source emissions rules are moving at a much faster pace than cap and trade legislation, which is stalled in Congress.

Sweeney will be joined in the discussion by Michael Gerrard, Director of the Columbia Law School Center for Climate Change Law.

John Sweeney has a national reputation in business litigation, having handled numerous “bet-the-company” cases, particularly disputes involving product liability and environmental law issues. A litigator with more than 30 years of experience, John is a National Director of DRI, the Voice of the Defense Bar, is ranked as a Maryland Super Lawyer and as one of the “Best Lawyers in America,” and has been elected a Fellow in both the America Bar Foundation and Litigation Counsel of America.
