SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS—Womble Carlyle attorney Merrick Benn was among the speakers at the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA) 50th Annual Convention, held Oct. 23-25 in San Antonio.
 
Benn participated in a panel discussion on “The Rapidly Evolving Heathcare Marketplace.” Topics included:
  • Segmentation of healthcare providers with segment recommendations;
  • Observations covering the technology pipeline and impact for lessors;
  • Meaningful use and the electronic health record;
  • New perspectives on financing, lifetime cost and life cycle management;
  • “How to Finance” decision-making processes from the lessees’ C suite;
  • Impact of legal, tax and accounting changes on the C suite thought process;
  • Comments about healthcare providers differentiating with technology;
  • Observations on current lease portfolios and asset values;
  • Recommendations for lessors regarding current lease portfolios;
  • Discussion of “re-booking” issues relating to FASB 13 operating leases;
  • New “Go to Market” strategies; marketing refreshment and sales engagement;
  • New leasing decision support tools to help present to new potential lessees.
 
Benn was joined in the discussion by Jack Beckwith of the Equipment Appraisal Group Inc. and David J. Waldron of Traction Business Development. Steven R. Riggs of De Lange Landen Financial Services, Inc., moderated the panel discussion.
 
Merrick Benn’s practice focuses on personal property commercial financing with an emphasis on negotiating and documenting middle market and big ticket transactions involving all equipment types and classes including manufacturing lines, aircraft (corporate and commercial), vessels (barges and tankers), railroad rolling stock, software, and technologies. He practices in Womble Carlyle’s Baltimore office.
