Compensation And Benefits
Compensation:
Attorneys are offered starting compensation that is competitive with firms of comparable size in the market.
Medical/Dental Insurance:
Medical Insurance is administered by United HealthCare. Medical Coverage-POS (Point of Service) plan.
- In-network physician visit: $25 co-pay.
- In-network hospital, labs and x-rays: Annual deductible with 90 percent coverage.
- Out-of-network: Annual deductible with 70 percent coverage of usual, reasonable and customary charges.
Dental Insurance is administered by United HealthCare.
- Choice of providers (no network).
- Basic dental plan with 2 preventive visits per year at 100 percent.
- Other services (crowns, bridges, fillings, etc.) are paid based on a percentage) after a deductible and up to the annual maximum.

If you enroll in medical and/or dental insurance, you may pay the premiums for yourself and eligible dependents on a pre-tax basis.
Medical Flexible Spending Account:
Set aside pre-tax dollars for expenses that are not otherwise covered by insurance such as co-pays, deductibles and coinsurance, eye glasses and contact lenses.
Flexible Spending Account for Dependent Care:
If you regularly incur day care expenses for a dependent, you may be able to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay your day care provider.
Life Insurance:
Associate attorneys receive $50,000 at no cost. Dependent life insurance is also available. Coverage is $5,000 for each dependent. Cost is $1.12 per month, regardless of the number of dependents.
Supplemental Life Insurance:
Employees may purchase an additional one, two, or three times their salary up to $1,000,000.00. Employee Guaranteed Issue Amount: $350,000.00
Spouse Benefit Amount:
$10,000 increments to a maximum of the lesser of 50% of your elected coverage amount approved by Hartford Life or $250,000. You may not elect coverage for your spouse if your spouse is covered as an employee under this policy. Spouse Guaranteed Issue Amount: $50,000
Child Benefit Amount:
Option A: Children 15 days to age 19 - $5,000.
Option B: Children 15 days to age 19 - $10,000.
At time of enrollment for life insurance, attorneys will also be enrolled in accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) & long-term disability insurance.
Vacation:
Associates receive paid vacation on the following schedule, based on length of service. Unused vacation may not be carried forward from one calendar year to the next, and the Firm does not compensate for any unused vacation when an associate leaves the Firm.
1st Calendar Year-2 weeks vacation*
2nd - 7th Year-3 weeks vacation
8th+ year-Vacation in accordance with staff schedule of Paid Days Off ("PDOs")
* Vacation, for the period associates are with the Firm prior to the beginning of the first calendar year, is prorated on a two-week basis.
Long Term Care:
The firm offers Long Term Care on a voluntary basis. Cost is based on age.
Retirement (401(k)):
401(k) Feature - The 401(k) feature allows employees to contribute pre-tax dollars (2-75% of salary) to a tax-qualified savings plan. The Firm will "match" 25% of your contribution up to 4% of your base pay. You are fully vested in the 401(k) feature (including the Firm match) as soon as you begin participation.
Maternity and Paternity Leave Policy
Attorneys are allowed 10 weeks of paid leave and 2 weeks of unpaid (FMLA) maternity leave. Employees may elect to use their unused vacation for an additional two weeks of paid leave.
Employees whose spouses give birth to a child are entitled to one week of paid parental leave. Any time spent on paid parental leave will be counted toward their 12-week FMLA allowance.
Washington, DC only: Attorneys receive 16 weeks of FMLA (10 weeks paid and 6 weeks vacation or LWOP).
Adoption Policy
Attorneys who will be the primary caregiver for an adopted child are eligible for 10 weeks of paid leave for the adoption of the child during any 12-month period. Employees may elect to use their unused vacation for an additional two weeks of paid leave. The leave must be requested 30 days, or as soon as possible, before the actual adoption and must be taken and completed within one year of the placement of the child (or children in the case of a multiple adoption). The administration of the policy will follow the Family and Medical Leave Act ("FMLA") guidelines as outlined under the family and medical leave policy. The total amount of leave for the adoption of a child will not exceed 12 weeks. If both spouses or parents work for the Firm, and each wishes to take leave for adoption, they may only take a combined leave of 12 weeks.
Disability Policy:
Attorneys are eligible for full salary continuation for disabling injuries or illnesses for up to six months. Thereafter, attorneys may receive benefits in accordance with the terms of the Firm's long-term disability policy.
Other types of leave:
Five (5) days available per year for funeral leave. Jury duty leave is given as needed. Contact Benefits & Workplace Initiatives for details regarding military leave.
Holidays:
Paid holidays each year include New Year's Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, 2 days at Thanksgiving and 2 days at Christmas.
Professional Allowance:
The Firm will provide associates a professional allowance of $1,000. The purpose of this limitation is to encourage attorneys to use at least $250 of their annual professional allowance on active involvement in professional organizations.
Bar Association Dues:
The Firm will reimburse associates 100% of the dues paid for membership in the local Bar, Junior Bar or YLD, State Bar Associations (to include two sections), and the American Bar Association (to include two sections). The Firm does not pay privilege license fees or court admission fees. The Firm will pay state bar dues (both mandatory and voluntary) for the state in which the attorney's office is located. The Firm will pay additional mandatory state bar dues in other states where an attorney is licensed.
Performance Evaluations:
Performance evaluations are done annually.
Salary Increases:
Approved salary increases are effective January 1. Any increase for an attorney hired during the year will be subject to adjustment for the number of months actually worked.
Payroll:
Payroll occurs twice a month, on the 15th and the last working day of the month. Direct deposit is mandatory. It takes at least two pay periods for direct deposit to become effective.
Parking:
The firm offers a Pre-Tax Parking Benefit Program for those incurring qualified monthly parking or transportation expenses.
