- If you have hobbies/interests, be sure to include them.
Cover Letter
- Cover letter should not restate your resume.
- Explain why you want a particular geographic area.
- Again, proofread;don't just spellcheck.
- Brevity is best.

The Interview
- You are the product - - sell yourself.
- Act like you care about the interview.
- Don't assume you are winning or losing an interview based on interviewer's reactions.
- Curb nervous habits.
- Maintain a sense of humor.
- Stay focused and be yourself.
Questions To Ask The Interviewer
- Can you describe the structure of the summer program?
- How are projects assigned?
- Is there a structured evaluation process for summer associates/associates?
- Does the firm provide mentors to summer associates/associates?
- Does the firm provide opportunities to associates for professional development?
- What is the ratio of summer associates to full time job offers?
- Can you describe a typical day of an associate?
Have Answers For Basic Questions
- Why did you go to law school?
- What do you want to accomplish as a lawyer?
- What criteria are you using in selecting firms for summer employment? Why our firm?
- Talk to former summer associates/associates.
- Be familiar with interviewer's background
- Are you interested in any specific area of law? (Don't just say "I don't know" - discuss areas to explore.)
- What do you like most/least about law school?
- Do you have an office preference?
- What is your GPA/rank? (if not listed on resume)
The Lunch Interview
- Don't lose your professionalism even if the interview feels relaxed.
- Don't drink too much (alcohol).
- Don't use inappropriate language.
- Remember table manners.
- Don't order too much food or messy food.
- Remember, an interview lunch is still an interview.
Thank you Letters
- Handwritten notes and typed letters are equally acceptable.
- Email is fine.
- It is OK to send one letter for routing.
General
- Take advantage of workshops provided by your Career Services Office.
- Always bring an extra copy of your resume/transcript/writing sample to the interview.
- Save money-use regular copy paper and make copies of your official transcript.
- Make sure your name appears on ALL pages of resume, grades, references, etc.
- When in doubt, call the firm recruiter.
