Summer Associate Program

We welcome Womble Carlyle summer associates to enjoy a diverse mix of meaningful work selected from a pool of projects, and social activities that will introduce students to our lawyers, our staff and the cities in which we live and work.

Summer associates have the opportunity to “make their own program” by choosing from a mix of legal research and document drafting projects, pro bono and community service activities. Each summer associate receives an attorney mentor with whom he/she can discuss projects, goals for the summer and work product.

Feedback is given on work assignments and opportunities abound for summer associates to attend trials, motions, mediations, and depositions, as well as closings, will executions and a variety of client conferences.

Social activities are geared toward making summer associates knowledgeable about the firm and the surrounding community. Representative events may include:

  • Comedy Club
  • Baseball
  • Bowling
  • Concerts
  • GoCart Racing
  • Practice Group Meetings/Dinners
  • Pool Tournament
  • Dinners at Partners’ Homes
  • Wine Tasting
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • Theme Parties
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Samaritan Inn (homeless shelter)

Advisors
Advisors play a significant role in the lives of summer associates at Womble Carlyle. Each summer associate will receive an advisor. These attorneys are confidants to the summer associate and assist them with any questions that might arise. The advisors may serve as consultants for work assignments. Advisors also provide technical assistance if a summer associate needs direction when writing. They may help monitor the workload of the summer associate and make a point to introduce the student throughout the firm.

Summer Associate Compensation and Benefits
Our summer associates are paid on the 15th and the last day of the month.

Summer associates are not eligible for benefits. Also, there are no mandatory billing requirements for summer associates.

Evaluations
We understand the importance of regular feedback to the professional development of summer associates. We encourage assigning attorneys to schedule a follow up meeting with the summer associate to discuss the final project in detail. Additionally, every three to four weeks throughout the summer, each summer associate will be a part of a project review. Work product will be discussed and constructive criticism offered for future work.

Hiring Criteria
Our firm hires able, motivated individuals from diverse social and economic backgrounds and from various sections of the country. The attorneys in our firm represent more than 80 different law schools.

In addition to considering academic achievement, the firm looks for associates with the ability, motivation, and personal qualities to provide consistently high quality legal services to our clients and to contribute in a positive way to the culture of the firm. Experience has shown that our most successful attorneys share the following core competencies: a strong intellect; strong technical skills; persuasive and effective writing and verbal skills; quality decision-making and problem solving skills; a drive for results; and most importantly, integrity.

Policy on Split Summers
The Womble Carlyle Summer Program runs 12 weeks from mid-May to the beginning of August. Second-year law students are allowed to split summers, but are required to stay at the firm for a minimum of 6 weeks. First-year law students are required to stay for the full 12 weeks of the program unless special permission is given on a case-by-case basis.

Project System
Womble Carlyle summer associates have the opportunity to select from a diverse mix of meaningful work. Summer associates can “make their own program” by choosing from a mix of legal research and document drafting projects, and pro bono and community service activities. Feedback is given on work assignments and opportunities abound for the students to attend trials, motions, mediations, and depositions, as well as closings, will executions and a variety of client conferences.

Womble Carlyle has a commitment to technology that few can match. We invest heavily in hardware, software and technology applications to increase efficiency. This is why our entire project and evaluation database is completely automated. Summer associates access all projects in real time via the firm intranet.

A principal purpose of our Summer Associate Program is to involve students in various aspects of the firm’s legal practice, particularly substantive matters having important consequences to our clients. In order to determine (or perhaps confirm) career interests in a certain type or types of practice, we strongly recommend that summer associates select a mix of assignments in different areas of law during the summer. We do not rotate summer associates through practice groups.

Once a summer associate identifies a project of interest, he/she will work directly with the assigning attorney. Just like an associate.
