In addition to his focus on patent preparation and prosecution in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical areas, Mr. Massey provides strategic counseling, and conducts and supervises research and analysis relating to patentability, infringement, and product development issues. As a biotechnology patent lawyer, Carl Massey has prepared applications and prosecuted patents relating to novel nucleic acids, proteins, antibodies, vaccines, transgenic animals, and gene therapy. In the role of strategic counselor for life sciences firms with extensive patent portfolios, Mr. Massey’s practice includes:

  • counseling companies in connection with major collaboration agreements, involving in-licensing and out-licensing
  • navigating through private and public financing events, including providing due diligence assistance through major funding rounds and agreement negotiations
  • guiding companies in partnerships with major pharmaceutical firms
  • auditing patent portfolios and other aspects of intellectual property protection such as trade secrets, to manage integration of particular aspects with a sound, overall intellectual property strategy consistent with a company's business development plan

Mr. Massey enjoys working with client companies to negotiate effective and profitable licensing arrangements, including licensing provisions associated with complex joint development and collaboration agreements. He regularly provides assistance to companies and universities in the context of industry/university relationships, and is familiar with issues of law of particular interest to university technology transfer offices and their industry partners.
