Chris focuses his practice on prosecution and defense of complex civil, commercial and regulatory disputes, including breach of contract, fraud, regulatory disputes, technology and software disputes and consumer finance litigation and investigations. He represents companies and individuals in both state and federal courts throughout the United States.
Chris’ experience includes representing clients in class actions, software design, development and implementation disputes, consumer finance enforcement and fraud, usury, corporate governance and shareholder rights, as well as manufacturing disputes, antitrust and securities litigation. He serves as lead counsel in every phase and level of litigation in federal and state courts in North Carolina, West Virginia, Delaware Chancery Court, Massachusetts, and Florida. He has tried multiple cases to jury verdict and arbitrations and administrative contested cases to final decision.
A representative sample of clients Chris serves includes: Bayer Crop Science, PepsiCo, Consert, Inc., ChemWare, Inc., Red Hat, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Eaton Corporation, Advance America, Revlon, Grandfather Home for Children, Presidential Bank, Wells Fargo, Tekelec and Vericrest Financial.
Chris invests the time necessary to understand his client’s business, industry and goals. He is attuned to developing winning legal strategies that not only meet the client’s needs but fit with the company’s overall direction. Chris recognizes that effective communication is central to successful client relationships – a key he does not lose sight of in delivering extraordinary client service.
Representative cases:
- Represented publicly traded technology company in a $200 million dispute involving mobile communication technology;
- Represented publicly traded consumer finance company in connection with the largest administrative contested case to be tried before the North Carolina Commissioner of Banks and Banking Commission;
- Represented publicly traded consumer finance company in class action involving allegations of usury and unfair or deceptive practices in connection with its lending activity;
- Represented publicly traded company in software design and implementation dispute;
- Represented shareholders of a closely held company in corporate governance dispute;
- Represented numerous banks in lender liability claims;
- Represented mental health services provider in connection with allegations of regulatory violations in an administrative contested case that resulted in a three day trial and complete exoneration; and
- Represented multiple individuals in closely held corporate dissolution disputes and establishment of shareholder rights and obligations.
Chris created and contributes to “BOOM, BUST & RECRIMINATION: A Consumer Finance Investigation and Enforcement Blog.” The blog focuses on developments in federal and state consumer finance investigations and enforcement throughout the Southeastern U.S. and critical developments nationwide.
