Mr. Michael is both an attorney and a registered architect. Prior to attending law school, he practiced as a registered architect and intern architect for over eight years in Florida and Texas. During those years, he was involved in all architectural phases of a variety of commercial, governmental, institutional, health care and residential projects. Since becoming an attorney, he has merged his background in architecture and law in the practice of construction law. Most of his practice involves representing owners during contract negotiations and other construction phases, in which his practical construction experience is of considerable value. He advises owners, developers and construction firms on project delivery choices in construction, including design-build, cost plus (with or without a guaranteed maximum price), and traditional design-bid-build. Mr. Michael focuses on resolving disputes through negotiation and mediation, but also is an experienced advocate in arbitration and litigation. Mr. Michael’s experience includes:
- preparing and negotiating design and construction contracts for a county board of education for a major expansion of educational facilities;
- preparing and negotiating design and construction contracts for several hospital facilities;
- preparing and negotiating design and construction contracts for several senior care assisted living and retirement communities;
- preparing and negotiating design, construction and development contracts for student housing private foundations;
- preparing and negotiating international construction design and construction management contracts in South and Central America for a large United States provider of Internet data center services in Latin America.
- preparing and negotiating an international engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts for a large United States polyester manufacturing company.
- representing a large church congregation in settling a major roof construction dispute;
- representing a national metal building manufacturer in contract and dispute resolution matters throughout the eastern and southern United States;
- representing a major precast concrete supplier in contract and dispute resolution matters throughout the eastern and southern United States;
- representing a local government unit in settling millions of dollars in claims in mediation over a four-year period arising over the construction of a government center and a county jail;
- representing a local government unit in settling millions of dollars in claims in mediation arising over the construction of a public landfill project;
- representing a large health care government contractor in connection with a government contracts equitable adjustment claim on a Veterans Affairs Outpatient Medical Clinic;
- representing a large national home improvement retailer in several construction mediation and litigation matters and lien related issues;
- representing numerous health care and public sector clients in multi-million dollar complex construction litigation and insurance claims involving delay damages and construction defects, including water intrusion and mold.
