For the past decade, Lewis has focused his practice on assisting clients in protecting their intellectual property.
 
Lewis assists clients with patent matters related to the mechanical arts. His practice includes patent searches, reviews and the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, and he routinely works with the United States Patent Office on these issues. He also counsels clients on patent rights and patentability issues. He frequently performs patentability opinions and non-infringement, freedom to operate, infringement, state-of-the-art, and design around studies on behalf of clients. His clients include companies in the manufacturing, textiles, specialty fabrics and mechanical designs industries.
 
Lewis also handles international patent applications and prosecution. Ultimately, his goal in all patent prosecutions is to obtain the broadest patent protection possible.
 
Before practicing law, Lewis worked as an engineer with Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) in the nuclear engineering area. His experience between 1983 and 1999 with CP&L included design engineering, nuclear licensing, project management, and independent assessment of nuclear plant activities. His engineering background helps give him the technical know-how and real-world experience to understand the patent needs of business clients.
 
Lewis has been a speaker on intellectual property fundamentals for the North Carolina Bar Association. He also mentors first-year law students at the Elon University School of Law.
