Cal is one of our more experienced trial lawyers, having tried over thirty jury trials in state and federal courts. He has also tried numerous non-jury matters, including numerous declaratory judgment trials. Cal is a partner in the Winston-Salem office.

Cal has spent the past several years splitting his time between (a) insurance coverage litigation, including coordinating a nine-state environmental coverage action for The Home Insurance Company, (b) managing the diet drug litigation in N.C. (over 1200 cases), and (c) large class action cases (including defending Wachovia Bank in a forced placed insurance case). He has also developed expertise in reinsurance coverage and litigation, construction defect coverage and litigation, directors and officers liability coverage, and antitrust and related commercial matters, including commercial arbitrations.

Cal has spent many years litigating on behalf of the construction industry, including defense of one of the leading producers of construction materials in a serious brain injury case arising out of the operation of one of the company’s trucks, representation of condominium owners in a large construction defect case against the general contractor, architect and the various subcontractors, and defense of construction companies on behalf of the firm’s insurance company clients.

Cal is the Chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. He is also serving his sixth two-year term as President of the Board of Directors of the Legal Aid Society of Northwest North Carolina. He is also a founding director of Legal Aid of North Carolina and recently completed a two year term as President of the Board of Directors of Legal Aid of North Carolina. He previously served as a member of the Board of Legal Services of N.C. He also serves as a member of the Pro Bono Advisory Committee of the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Project. In 1996, he was honored by the Firm with the first Irving Carlyle Pro Bono Publico Award.

When Cal is not working, he spends most of his time with his wife, three daughters and one son. He is an avid reader of history and politics. He also enjoys golf when time permits.
