Rick Toering is an attorney in the Intellectual Property Practice Group and is a member of the firm's Electrical/Software Patent Team. He counsels clients in patent matters with a focus on the strategic development and procurement of patent portfolios protecting electronic and software-related technology. His practice includes counseling clients regarding validity, infringement and potential avoidance of third party patent rights. In addition, he routinely provides advice in support of technology transactions and patent litigation.

His technical background includes electrical, computer, software and mechanical technologies, and more particularly, computer and microprocessor architectures, internet applications, electronic commerce, network security, cryptography, computer graphics, telecommunications, digital and analog communications, digital signal processing, control systems and biomedical devices. He also has significant experience with cross-functional matters, particularly computer and/or software related inventions in the chemical and biotechnology arts, including bioinformatics.

Toering is an adjunct professor at The George Washington University Law School where he teaches Patent Strategy and Practice. Toering also teaches claims drafting for electrical, computer and software related inventions at the annual AIPLA Patent Prosecution Bootcamp.
