Roddey M. Ligon, Jr.*

Winston-Salem

*Retired Member/ineligible to practice law in NC.

Rod Ligon is widely recognized for his experience in North Carolina health care and municipal law. During his distinguished career with the Firm, he has represented the City of Winston-Salem, Forsyth County and numerous other cities and counties on a variety of municipal and North Carolina constitutional law issues. Recently, Mr. Ligon served as lead attorney for Winston-Salem and Forsyth County in the highly publicized Maready v. City of Winston-Salem, et al. case, in which he successfully argued before the North Carolina Supreme Court the constitutionality of governmental use of economic incentives to attract new business. The Court’s ruling overturned a ban on incentives, which had threatened North Carolina’s ability to compete economically with other states in recruiting new businesses.

In the summer of 1996, Mr. Ligon became the first attorney in private practice to receive the prestigious "Ernest H. Ball Award for Excellence in Municipal Law" from the North Carolina Association of Municipal Attorneys. He was cited as serving as attorney of record in 114 decisions reported by the North Carolina appellate courts and federal courts with jurisdiction in North Carolina, many of which represent significant decisions in municipal law. In 1968 he received the Outstanding County Attorney award from the North Carolina Association of County Attorneys.
