Initially a research physicist in the fields of infrared optics, image processing, and optical sensor design, Steve Kerr subsequently became a patent lawyer and was a founding shareholder of the law firm of Isaf, Vaughan & Kerr in Atlanta, Georgia, which merged with Womble Carlyle on October 1, 1998. Mr. Kerr has practiced patent law in Atlanta for over 20 years.
Mr. Kerr oversees patent portfolios for and provides strategic intellectual property counsel to numerous U.S. corporations. He personally has prepared and prosecuted electronics, optics, electromechanical, mechanical, and computer software patent applications in the U. S. and throughout the world and has significant experience in appeals, reexamination proceedings, and reissue patent applications. Mr. Kerr has participated in patent as well as trademark and copyright litigation in U. S. District and Appeals Courts and in European courts and has experience in international patent dispute arbitration proceedings conducted abroad. His practice also includes IP risk analysis and strategic counseling including rendering infringement, design-around, and validity opinions, membership on client intellectual property strategy committees, coordination with client business strategists, and litigation support.
