Lawyer Bio : William C. Matthews, Jr.

William C. Matthews, Jr.

"Bill"

Raleigh

Charlotte

Bill’s practice has centered upon commercial real estate and commercial lending for over twenty-five years. His work in each of these disciplines gives him a unique perspective that enables him to counsel clients creatively and effectively in each field.

In his real estate work, Bill is involved in all aspects of a project’s development, including negotiating purchase and sale documentation, co-ordinating due diligence for such acquisitions, and preparing and reviewing other documentation typically involved in real estate development (such as easements, declarations, and financing arrangements). In addition, Bill represents owners in the drafting, negotiation and interpretation of office leases and retail leases. Bill is frequently asked to represent large pharmaceutical companies, manufacturers and industrial plant owners in the real estate components of larger transactions involving the transfer of all assets of those companies.

Bill has extensive experience in both loan originations and problem loans. His loan origination work for banks and other institutional lenders encompasses all aspects of lending secured by commercial real estate as well as other asset-based lending. In that regard, he frequently counsels lenders on structuring loans and assessing alternatives that protect a lender. Bill's problem loan work focuses on loans secured by real estate, including the following elements: (i) negotiating workout agreements and forbearance agreements and analysis of problem loans; (ii) seeking receiverships for hotels, office properties, and retail properties; and (iii) co-ordinating all aspects of foreclosures for lenders. Bill's work for developers gives him a unique insight into the issues a lender will face upon the acquisition of title to a property.

Bill has been selected for inclusion in Business North Carolina’s “Legal Elite,” as well as for “The Best Lawyers in America” and “North Carolina Super Lawyers.” He has served on the Board of Directors of the Council for Economic Development and has been recognized by that organization for his contributions to CED.

Bill works out of both our firm's Charlotte and Raleigh offices.
