Gov. Jim Hunt Honored for Community Service by Raleigh Chamber

RALEIGH, N.C.—Womble Carlyle attorney and former four-term North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt has been recognized by the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce with the A.E. Finlay Distinguished Service Award, honoring Gov. Hunt’s devotion to the community.
 
The A.E. Finley Distinguished Service Award has been given annually since 1970 to recognize a person who has contributed time, talent and service to the benefit of the community. Gov. Hunt received his award Sept. 29th at the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting.
 
During his tenure as governor, Gov. Hunt focused on promoting industry through business-friendly policies and a dedication to improving public education. North Carolina has regularly led the nation in new job creation per capita and in foreign investment. Gov. Hunt also focused job creation through new technology by establishing the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina, and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. In 2007, Governor Hunt joined Governor Luther Hodges as the only governors in state history to be inducted into the North Carolina Business Hall of Fame.
 
Gov. Hunt also is a nationally recognized leader in education reform. During the 1990s, North Carolina’s public schools improved more on standardized test scores than any other state in the nation. Gov. Hunt founded Smart Start, a public-private partnership that focuses on health care, quality child care and family support for young children.
