WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—Judicial elections typically are among the most ignored on the ballot. But these races are critical, in that federal judges make many decisions that impact the daily lives of North Carolinians.

So says Womble Carlyle attorney Bob Numbers, who serves as the Chairman of the Triad Chapter of the Federalist Society. The Federalist Society sponsored a forum which brought together eight candidates in statewide judicial elections. Participants in the forum were:

  • N.C. Court of Appeals Judge Barbara Jackson, a candidate for the North Carolina Supreme Court;
  • N.C. Court of Appeals (Steelman Seat) – Judge Sanford L. Steelman, Jr. (incumbent, running unopposed);
  • N.C. Court of Appeals (Elmore Seat) – Judge Rick Elmore (incumbent) and Steven Walker;
  • N.C. Court of Appeals(Calabria Seat) – Judge Ann Marie Calabria (incumbent) and Judge Jane Gray;
  • N.C. Court of Appeals (Geer Seat) – Judge Martha Geer (incumbent) and Dean Poirier.
Numbers and fellow Womble Carlyle attorney Beth Southern were actively involved in organizing the event, which took place Sept. 7th at the Thomas K. Hearn Ballroom in Winston-Salem. Veteran news reporter Bob Buckley of WGHP Fox8 served as moderator for the forum.

The forum received extensive media coverage, including the High Point Enterprise, North Carolina Lawyers Weekly, WBT radio in Charlotte and News 14 Carolinas. A second forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sept. 21st at the downtown Marriott in Raleigh.
