Best in Show: Womble Carlyle Leads the Pack for Doggone Good Cause
August 1, 2009
Who let the dogs out? Why, Womble Carlyle of course!
The firm took home both First Prize and People's Choice in the United Way of Forsyth County's "United We Can" Kick-Off Contest Thursday. The challenge? Build a sculpture
out of 50% packaged food (which then was donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank). The result? One amazing doghouse for Winston the Bulldog.
The dog house weighs 1,250 pounds and consists of $2,500 worth of food, donated by firm employees. From those raw materials, a dedicated team of staff members constructed the winning entry using oatmeal canisters, pasta boxes, cans of beans and even a few Slim Jims snacks.
The construction team of Ken Michael, Heather Allison, Lisa Breeding, Steve Burgener, Gayle Burgener, Yvonne Pierberg and Josh Smith spent all day Saturday constructing the dog house in the lobby of our Winston-Salem office. On Thursday, they tore it down, moved it a few blocks down the street to Civic Plaza in downtown Winston-Salem and reassembled it, box by box, can by can. Eight hours later, the tired, somewhat sun-baked crew was rewarded for their hard work with the announcement that Winston's Doghouse had, indeed, been voted Best in Show.
Keith Vaughan is chairing this year's United Way of Forsyth County campaign, which makes the victory extra special. Thanks to everyone who voted and an extra-big hand, er, paw for the award-winning construction team!
