TYSONS CORNER, VA.—Attorney Ryan Berry has joined Womble Carlyle’s growing Government Business Team based in Northern Virginia. Berry focuses his practice on supporting defense and intelligence contractors in risk mitigation, crisis response, investigations, and civil litigation both at home and abroad. A graduate of West Point and a former Air Force officer, Berry brings years of industry experience as a former defense acquisitions program manager and IT consultant.
Berry is a counselor and advocate for contractors operating in an unprecedented business climate fraught with challenges such as: robust congressional oversight, aggressive inspectors general, insourcing pressures, international compliance issues, expanded ethics, record-keeping, and reporting requirements, as well as radical changes in procurement philosophy as the U.S. Government shifts its focus from simultaneous large-scale conflicts to global engagement in conflicts of all sizes.
Amidst these industry challenges, Berry has experience managing company responses and defending contractor interests in the face of government oversight. He advises clients contemplating geographic or business line expansions, instructs employees prior to overseas deployments, conducts internal investigations, and provides critical incident response services – helping his clients quickly assess what happened, why it happened, the company’s legal and reputational exposure, and what to do next.
In addition, Berry frequently represents defense contractors in cross-border litigation involving alien tort claims, the application of foreign substantive laws in U.S. courts, contractor immunity arguments and related defenses, and the international collection and use of evidence.
“Ryan’s practice fits perfectly with our core practices of representing government contractors and technology companies in our Northern Virginia office. We are thrilled to enhance our existing team with a person of Ryan’s quality, legal experience, and business background,” said Dan Mackesey, Managing Member of Womble Carlyle’s Northern Virginia office. “Ryan is a respected, uniquely skilled counselor to defense contractors throughout their business risk cycle, and is known as a zealous defender of contractor interests.”
