Gordon Schreck, PGL of the firm’s Admiralty and Maritime Practice Group in Charleston, presented the Maritime Association of South Carolina’s Christopher Gadsden Award to Admiral Thad W. Allen, USCG (Ret.) at an award banquet on December 6.

In 2005, when he was Coast Guard Chief of Staff, Adm. Allen was the U.S. Coast Guard’s “face” for their response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, effectively managing the Federal Government’s response and recovery activity throughout the Gulf Coast region. Then in May 2010, as Adm. Allen was finishing his tenure as Commandant of the Coast Guard, he was tasked by Pres. Obama to be the National Incident Commander for the BP/ DEEPWATER HORIZON oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  He effectively managed what became the worst oil disaster in the nation’s history with intelligence, energy, openness and dignity.

Upon his retirement from the Coast Guard, Adm. Allen became a senior vice-president and partner in the Washington, DC office of Booz Allen Hamilton.

The Christopher Gadsden Award is presented by the Maritime Association of SC to a person whose local, statewide, or national achievements are worthy of recognition. Criteria for selection includes sustained leadership in a field related to international commerce, and the demonstration of vision, integrity and loyalty. The award is named for Christopher Gadsden, a Revolutionary-era Charlestonian, known as “The Flame of Liberty”, and best remembered as the builder and owner of one of the largest commercial shipping and vessel repair facilities in Colonial America. A strong supporter of independence, and a brigadier general in the Continental Army, he subsequently served in the Continental Congress and was twice lieutenant governor of South Carolina.
