Greensboro Office Celebrates 10th Anniversary With “Black Hawk Down” Hero
September 29, 2011
GREENSBORO, N.C.—For most of us, a “crisis” is having a bad day at the office or a flat tire. For Sgt. Matt Eversmann and an elite group of Army Rangers a crisis was being surrounded by thousands of attacking Somali insurgents, completely cut off from aid or support.
Sgt. Evermann’s harrowing story of courage, leadership and selflessness under fire was the real-life inspiration for the film “Black Hawk Down.” Eversmann and his team of U.S. Army Rangers were in Somalia as part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in that war-torn nation. On October 3, 1993, they were sent on a mission to apprehend Mohammad Farrah Aidid, a powerful warlord who ordered the brutal murder of 24 Pakistani peacekeepers. During the mission, a U.S. helicopter was shot down and when Eversmann’s team came to their rescue, they found themselves surrounded by hostile forces, outnumbered 100-to-1. Despite the odds, the soldiers held off the enemy in a fierce 18-hour battle until help could arrive.
On Sept. 22nd, Sgt. Eversmann came to Greensboro as the keynote speaker for the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Womble Carlyle’s Greensboro Office. Firm clients joined Womble Carlyle attorneys and staff members from several offices for the event, which was held at the Proximity Hotel.
Greensboro Office Managing Partner Tom Stukes opened the gala with a tribute to the Firm’s clients who have made the office a success, and Firm Managing Partner Keith Vaughan delivered welcoming remarks.
Ten years ago, Womble Carlyle merged with the local firm of Rhodes and Mason to create the Greensboro office. Opening this office demonstrated Womble Carlyle’s commitment to Greensboro and to the overall Triad region.
