RALEIGH, N.C.—Womble Carlyle product liability litigation attorney Jackie Terry Hughes was interviewed by Law 360 about potential concerns for food importers related to the recent disaster in Japan.

A damaged nuclear power plant in Japan is leaking radiation, which is threatening to contaminate the local food supply. Law 360 asked Hughes what U.S. food companies should consider in order to minimize their liability.

Hughes said that companies should review their supply contracts, and said that suppliers could share in the liability.

"A consumer can reasonably argue [that] with the amount of media exposure happening with Japan and the potential for contamination, companies are on notice that they should be putting these measures in place," she told Law 360. “It isn't like this was an E. coli issue that just came out of the blue.”

Jackie Terry Hughes is a product liability litigator with more than 20 years of experience. She is well versed in risk management and due diligence, and advises clients on such issues as warranty terms and conditions, drafting warning language in contracts seeking to limit liability, and assisting clients in claims handling and analysis. She practices in Womble Carlyle’s Raleigh office.
