Michael Cashman Named Chairman of Upstate Fatherhood Coalition
December 21, 2011
Michael Cashman has been elected Chairman of the Board for the Upstate Fatherhood Coalition. The UFC is a non-profit organization created in 2000 by combining the efforts of over 12 existing non-profit organizations. It serves the counties in upstate South Carolina by expanding the involvement of fathers in the lives of their children, helping to develop parenting and relationship-building skills, facilitating the creation of team-parenting plans between unmarried mothers and fathers, assisting in the negotiation of child support issues, assisting with employment, and providing opportunities for peer support.
In South Carolina today 41 percent of children are born to unwed mothers. Children in homes without fathers are five times more likely to live in poverty. The goal of the Upstate Fatherhood coalition is to end this cycle and restore fatherhood to the community by providing job readiness, legal education, parenting skills, counseling and peer support and life skills.
