VIDEO: Gregg Skall Discusses How Broadcasters Can Become Participants in the FCC’s Broadband Plan
January 4, 2011
The FCC’s Broadband Plan can work better for everyone if it engages over-the-air broadcasters as business partners.
That is the view of Womble Carlyle telecommunications attorney Gregg Skall. In responding to the FCC’s proposal to expand broadband Internet service, Skall says the FCC should look to local broadcasters to become broadband providers, instead of asking them to surrender bandwidth.
Skall notes that broadcasters have long been innovators and early adaptors to new technology. Plus, they have a tremendous incentive to develop new revenue streams. By working with local broadcasters, the FCC can meet the needs of the marketplace for greater broadband access while protecting the interests of over-the-air broadcasters. In Skall’s scenario, everyone wins.
