Washington, D.C. attorney James Kahl quoted in today's edition of The Politico

The National Republican Congressional Committee said last week that a former treasurer allegedly embezzled “hundreds of thousands” in campaign funds. The question now: Will the Federal Election Commission add insult to injury by slapping the committee with fines for misreporting its financials? James A. Kahl, an attorney at Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice who served as deputy general counsel at the FEC from 2002 to 2007, said the FEC has broad authority to handle individual cases as it sees fit.
“The FEC has discretion in enforcement,” Kahl said. “Clearly, they will look at the totality of the circumstances.”
