WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—The University of North Carolina Hispanic Association and the Carolina Latina/o Collaborative have named Womble Carlyle attorney Hada de Varona Haulsee the first-ever winner of their Outstanding Latina Alumna Award.

Haulsee was honored at an April 10th ceremony in Chapel Hill, as part of the 2nd Annual Latina/o Alumni Reunion. The Carolina Hispanic Association and Carolina Latina/o Collaborative hosted the reunion and awards program.

A native of Cuba, Haulsee is a 1981 graduate of the University Of North Carolina School Of Law. Haulsee wrote a legal guidebook for lawyers that translates commonly used legal terms from North Carolina criminal law into Spanish. That guidebook is now in use all across the state to help bridge the gap between English-speaking attorneys and Spanish-speaking clients, so that the attorneys can give these clients better representation. In 2007, the North Carolina Bar Association recognized Haulsee with its Citizen Lawyer Award for this effort.

Haulsee serves as Regional President of the Hispanic National Bar Association, and as a member of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Latino Affairs Committee.

“I am humbled by this honor,” Haulsee said. “I didn’t do anything special. I did what I had to do. From the time I was a child, I was taught, not by words, but by my parents’ example, that to whom much is given, much is expected.”

Haulsee has nearly 30 years of experience in defending clients in large-scale class action and product liability lawsuits. Among her successes includes representing Dryvit Systems Inc. (a building materials manufacturer) in a landmark 2001 product liability case that established a legal standard for similar litigation. The case (Lienhart v. Dryvit Systems, Inc.) has been cited dozens of times in courts across the country.

Haulsee has been named to North Carolina Super Lawyers and to The Best Lawyers in America. Also, in December 2009, she was named one of the Triad’s Women Extraordinaire by Business Leader Media.
