On Tuesday, February 10th, Womble Carlyle’s Winston-Salem Office hosted a ceremony commemorating the Piedmont Triad Research Park clearing an important environmental milestone.

Like many former industrial sites, the park’s North District had some environmental issues that presented a stumbling block to future development. Under the state’s Brownfields Program, administered by the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources, these sites are rehabilitated for new development.

Tuesday’s reception marked the completion of the brownsfields process for the North District. Two other sections of the park—the Central and South districts—will soon earn this clearance. Womble Carlyle attorneys Alfred Adams and Lori Hinnant have been working with Wake Forest University Health Services, the park’s developers, to gain these environmental clearances.

In attendance Tuesday were:

  • Anita Conrad, Assistant GC, Wake Forest University
  • Tony Duque, Brownfields Project Manager, NC Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Waste Management
  • Doug Edgeton, Senior VP for Finance and Administration and COO, Wake Forest University School of Medicine
  • Reid Morgan, GC, Wake Forest University
  • Graydon Pleasants, In-house Developer for PTRP, Wake Forest University Health Sciences

The Piedmont Triad Research Park is a 200-acre community in downtown Winston-Salem that combines biotech research and development with mixed-use living. When completed, it will bring thousands of high-paying jobs to the Triad region.
