Womble Carlyle Pro Bono Efforts Featured In North Carolina Lawyers Weekly
September 5, 2007
Womble Carlyle's pro bono work aiding victims of Hurricane Katrina is spotlighted in a front-page article in the Sept. 3rd issue of North Carolina Lawyers Weekly.
The same edition also features a profile article on former Womble Carlyle attorney Craig Cannon and his pro bono work as the national coordinator for Disaster Legal Services for the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division.
Teams of attorneys traveled to New Orleans in the summer of 2006 to assist victims of the hurricane and subsequent flooding. In cooperation with Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, Womble Carlyle attorneys and staff members worked with Katrina victims to complete and file the legal work necessary to give these victims clear title to their homes. The firm interviewed hundreds of potential clients, and was able to begin helping almost 200 people over the summer.
In total, more than 30 Womble Carlyle attorneys and staff members traveled to New Orleans each week from July 10 through August 31, 2006 to provide direct aid to the victims. Lawyers and administrative professionals throughout the firm's home offices provided drafting and research assistance.
The North Carolina Lawyers Weekly article was timed to coincide with the second anniversary of the hurricane. Womble Carlyle pro bono director Tripp Greason and attorneys Cris Windham, Georgiana Yonuschot and Craig Cannon were quoted in the article by staff writer Guy Loranger.
North Carolina Lawyers Weekly is an award-winning statewide newspaper targeting the legal community.
