WCSR Pro Bono Client Receives Oprah Angel Award
June 7, 2006
The Global Fund for Children, a Womble Carlyle pro bono client for nearly 10 years, has received an Oprah's Book Club Award of $50,000 given by Oprah's Angel Network, a public charity formed in 1998. The Global Fund for Children (GFC) is known for their international work in advancing the dignity of children and youth around the world, complemented by a dynamic media program that, through books, documentary photography, and film, highlights the issues affecting children and celebrates the global society in which we all live. The GFC specializes in funding community-based organizations working with some of the world's most vulnerable children and youth. This year, GFC will distribute close to $2 million in grants to 144 groups in 55 countries.
As part of GFC's efforts, the organization has a book-publishing program which produces vibrant photo-illustrated children's books demonstrating the similarities of children throughout the world and celebrating the shared processes of childhood.
With the help of the Angel Network, more than 17,000 GFC books will be distributed to children and youth in such countries as Rwanda, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and in the Middle East.
RTP's Laura Luger has worked closely with the Global Fund for Children for 10 years and chaired the Board of Directors for the organization for eight years. In an effort to honor Laura's work with the organization, GFC dedicated a conference room to her in her name. They have also dedicated, in her honor, two scholarships to Afghan women who are currently studying at the Afghanistan Institute of Learning.
